DPWH Prepares to Open Manila’s Iconic Bridge

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is preparing for the next month opening of iconic Binondo – Intramuros Bridge Project.

DPWH Secretary Roger G. Mercado is proud to announce the soon opening of Binondo – Intramuros Bridge with years of hard work by DPWH Unified Project Management Office (UPMO) Operations team headed by Undersecretary Emil K. Sadain brought this monumental project nearing the finish line.

The Binondo-Intramuros Bridge Project, one (1) of the flagship infrastructure projects of the DPWH under the Build Build Build (BBB) Program, involves the construction of 680 linear meters bridge connecting historic district of Intramuros at Solana Street and Riverside Drive with the bustling district of Binondo at Rentas Street/Plaza del Conde Street and Muelle dela Industria.

Undersecretary Sadain, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s Chief Implementer of flagship projects under BBB Program, visited the project on Wednesday, March 16, 2022 to gauge how the UPMO-Roads Management Cluster 1 (Bilateral) led by Project Director Benjamin A. Bautista with Project Manager Melchor Kabiling as project in-charge and contractor China Road and Bridge Corporation is coping with the target bridge inauguration by Holy Week this coming April.

The bridge project features (2)-way four (4)-lane basket-handle tied steel arch main bridge that will not only cut travel time of approximately 30,000 vehicles daily between the two (2) busy districts of Intramuros and Binondo in Manila but will also become a new tourist haven in Manila.

With its location over Pasig River and dedicated pathways for pedestrians, joggers and bikers, it is expected that the Binondo – Intramuros Bridge once opened will attract the selfie-stick tourists who normally flood every square inch of scenic spots in Manila especially during sunset time, said Undersecretary Sadain.

Amid a cycling boom prompted by the coronavirus pandemic and desire to reduce reliance on cars amid the rising fuel prices, the ₱3.39 Billion bridge financed by a grant aid from the People’s Republic of China has a protected pedestrian/bike lane.

The pedestrian and bike lane component is more than just a safe and convenient option but is also a symbol of Philippine highways fully embracing low-carbon transportation for a sustainable future.

In particular, bike lane/pedestrian lane mean cyclists, pedestrians as well as joggers no longer must play chicken with motorized traffic for road space, added Undersecretary Sadain.

To date, workers are doing the access ramps, installation of inner and outer guard rails and light post, repainting of steel components, and other miscellaneous activities.
